Duo rescued at Courthouse Rock

On the last day of September, Powell County Search & Rescue, Powell County Emergency Medical Services, WCSART and Middle Fork Fire/Rescue were dispatched to Courthouse Rock for two young hikers who fell about 45 feet, sustaining traumatic injuries. Both patients were stabilized by EMS personnel, packaged and transported to two awaiting medical helicopters, which landed in a private field in the vicinity. The patients were flown to UK Medical Center in stable but serious condition. We wish a speedy recovery to the two injured hikers and thank all the agencies that responded for doing such a great job.

At the completion of this call while headed back to incident command, WCSART received another call for two lost hikers near Angel Windows. A team member not on the Courthouse Rock scene was able to contact the duo, identify their location and provide instructions remotely to get them back to the trailhead. It was a welcome ending to a very tiring afternoon.
