Rescue Stories
One day the team did three rescues back-to-back without coming out of the woods. “I think I was going for 12 to 14 hours straight,” Team Member Billy Williams said. “This all happened on July 4, so we got a fireworks show from Chimney Top Rock as icing on the cake.”
A man slipped on Indian Staircase and slid to a spot just one foot from a likely fatal drop. The team lowered a rescuer down, got the man into a harness and lowered him safely to the ground before dark. “What’s better than getting out to this cool area at sunset while helping save a guy’s life,” said team member Brendon Pierson.
A woman fell 40 feet onto the Douglas Trail. Her boyfriend slipped next. Unbelievably, another young lady fell right behind them. WSCART rushed to the scene with Powell County Search & Rescue, and the teams carried them out. “All three had sustained broken backs and they were on the verge of hypothermia,” said team member Clifton Gifford. “I was first on scene with two others, so at first, we were short-handed. Luckily, all of them eventually recovered.”
