Team helps injured climber at Roadside Crag

On March 9, at 6:30 p.m., WCSART responded to an incident at Graining Fork Nature Preserve (Roadside Crag) involving an injured climber on the route “Scissors” (5.11d).

The incident occurred while the party was cleaning equipment. When the climber removed the final quickdraw, slack was introduced into the rope system, causing the belayer to swing into a rock and sustain a head injury.

WCSAR personnel arrived on scene and assessed the patient, who was already in the process of walking out. After a further evaluation by Lee County EMS, the patient was transported by friends to Clark Regional Hospital for additional medical care.

Safety Reminders:

  • Helmets Matter: We urge all outdoor recreationists to wear proper safety equipment, including helmets, and to remain vigilant while climbing and belaying.
  • No Fees for Rescue: We would like to reiterate that WCSAR does not charge for our services. The climbers in this incident were initially reluctant to call for help due to a fear of fees. Please never hesitate to reach out when help is needed.
  • Cleaning overhanging routes can be dangerous and has resulted in many accidents. Consider using these tips from the American Alpine Club to do it safely. https://publications.americanalpineclub.org/…/13201216058
