Team rescues Creation Falls hiker and lost group

WCSART had a busy day that began with a call at 4 p.m. to help a woman who fell at Creation Falls and suffered a head injury. While severe weather moved in, team members reached her, treated her, packaged her into a stokes basket and carried her to the trailhead and waiting ambulance.

While the rescue was in progress, WCSART received a second 911 call for hikers lost on the Sheltowee Trace. Although this group could not be reached by phone, Powell County dispatch provided coordinates showing the hikers were 1.5 miles from the Bison Way trailhead. Because they were not aware they had missed the Sheltowee Trace intersection with Bison Way, they had continued North and needed help. WCSART sent a hasty team, found them and escorted them back to the trailhead. We thank our friends at the Powell County Search & Rescue for responding to assist if additional resources were required.

Then at 5:30 p.m., a third call came regarding an incident at an abandoned deep mine in Breathitt County. As details continued to come in, WCSART’s help with a technical rope rescue was not needed. News channels reported that the man was searching for ginseng, entered the mine and collapsed, and the fatality is under investigation.
