At approximately 12:30 PM September 2, Wolfe County Search & Rescue received a call regarding a hiker who had become stuck approximately halfway up Indian Staircase in the Red River Gorge.
The hiker reported becoming dizzy and afraid to continue either up or down the staircase.
A hasty team of three WCSART members went and responded with a rope system in hand in case a technical rope operation was necessary. Fortunately, the rope system was not needed. Our team members assisted the hiker down the staircase then accompanied her back to the trailhead.
The mission was successfully completed at approximately 3:00 PM.
We are thankful the situation was resolved safely and without the need for a technical rope rescue. This is another reminder that going off trail in the RRG can be challenging, and hikers should always know their limitations and be prepared for the terrain they are entering
