At approximately 7:30 p.m. September 12, Wolfe County Search & Rescue responded to a call to assist two hikers who had ascended Cloud Splitter in the Red River Gorge.
Reaching the top of Cloud Splitter requires a technical scramble to access the cliff top. The two hikers used a handline that had been placed by someone else to assist with the ascent. While they were on top, the handline was removed without their knowledge, leaving them understandably concerned about attempting the descent without the line or assistance.
WCSAR arrived on the scene and team members ascended the cliff to reach the hikers. A belay line was established, and each hiker was safely lowered to the base of the cliff after being placed in a rescue harness.
Fortunately, our team consists of members who are experienced and comfortable with this type of technical terrain. Many of our members are also experienced rock climbers, and that skill, training, and experience proved extremely valuable during last night’s operation.
We’re proud of our team and grateful that everyone made it safely off the cliff. This call is also a good reminder for visitors to not trust their life to gear that you did not place, and to make sure you have the proper equipment and knowledge for your planned adventure.
